> Where to go out in Pereybere and Grand Baie, from The Cloud rooftop bar to the Banana Beach Club with live music every night.

## Pereybere

Pereybere, a few minutes north of Grand Baie, has a handful of relaxed bars and restaurants along the Royal Road and the beach.

### The Cloud Rooftop & Lounge Bar

The Cloud is the place for a sundowner in Pereybere. The rooftop and lounge bar sits next to the Hibiscus boutique hotel on the Royal Road, close to the beach. Come around sunset for the view, then stay for cocktails and tapas or other light bar food. Music is mostly from DJs, and salsa and Latin dance evenings are held from time to time. The bar is open daily until late; its Facebook page has the current opening hours and events.

## Grand Baie

Grand Baie is the undisputed centre of Mauritian nightlife. Here you will find most of the clubs and bars.

### Banana Beach Club

Grand Baie is where the party is happening! In the centre of the tourist town you can find a legend of Mauritian nightlife: the Banana Beach Club. It started in the early 1990s as a small hole in the wall and has grown into one of the best-known nightlife venues on the island. Grand Baie’s nightlife district can hardly be imagined without it.

The well-patronised bar was even the backdrop for several films and for the TV ad of the famous Phoenix beer. Celebrities who wanted to discover Mauritian nightlife have been guests at the Banana Beach Club, too.

Banana Beach Club is popular among tourists and locals, so there is always a varied audience in the trendy open-air bar. A big old flamboyant tree grows right in the middle of it.

If you love concerts, Banana Beach Club is the right place to be. The current owners have run the bar since 2003 and made live music its trademark: every night bands play jazz, blues, rock or fusion. Part of the same venue is the Blue Note Jazz 'n Blues Club, with a stage for the finest live music, a speakeasy bar on the mezzanine and the Blue Sky Bar on the roof, overlooking the flamboyant tree. If you want to have dinner first, the venue also has a grill restaurant, The Grill. For reservations, call or write on WhatsApp.

Even a cyclone may not close the bar. Once, when a Class II cyclone warning was in force in Mauritius, the Banana Beach Club was still open. “There was a cyclone outside – and inside!” the manager of “Banana” commented on that memorable night.
