> Renting a car in Mauritius: requirements, what the all-inclusive price covers, insurance deductibles and how to book.

The best way to travel independently in Mauritius is by car, because going by bus takes a long time, especially for long distances. After getting used to the left-hand traffic, you can drive easily on the good road network of Mauritius.

There are many car rental agencies on the island, but it is recommended to book before you travel. [www.car-hire-mauritius.com](https://www.car-hire-mauritius.com/), a service of Indian Ocean Travel Ltd, works with rental companies all over Mauritius and lets you choose a specific model online: small economy cars, SUVs, minivans, convertibles and cars with automatic transmission. The staff speak German, English and French.

## Requirements and prices

The minimum age to rent a car is 21 years, and you need at least one year of driving experience. A driving licence from your home country is sufficient. The end price depends on the season (the peak season is October to April) and on the number of days you want to rent the car. The minimum rental period is four days; for last-minute bookings two or three days are sometimes possible. A 10-day rental between May and September is the best value.

## What the all-inclusive price covers

- unlimited kilometres
- comprehensive insurance, theft insurance (vehicle only) and liability insurance
- an additional driver (up to two insured drivers)
- airport and transfer surcharges
- all taxes and fees
- in most cases delivery of the car to your hotel or to the airport (in some places on the island a transport fee is charged and shown during booking)
- free GPS navigation and free child seats

Fuel is not included. The comprehensive insurance has a deductible of 15,000, 25,000 or 35,000 Rs, depending on the car, and for a small fee you can book insurance without a deductible.
